Well Kenshi is a harsh world I won't complain.. I routinely sit characters in the Hub bar and the Rebel Outpost/HQ/whatsits. They're there just to keep an eye on things. (When basing out of The Hub.) There's literally no way you can guard an NPC in any automated way.

Arid is actually a perfectly fine biome for crop production. Cactus + Wheatstraw eventually can make dustwiches which is an acceptable late-game food setup. Hemp can be used to make fabric. The hub is ok. There are two bars and the ruined buildings are cheap, so you can quite easily set up a place to rest if moving through. Squin is better for actually living. Merchants are better, two ore deposits right outside town, longhouses can hold crafting benches.Just started playing the game and i bought a house in the hub.
